Dillan Gibbons of Florida State University Selected as 2022 Wuerffel Trophy Recipient

The Wuerffel Trophy

Offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons of Florida State University is the 2022 recipient of the Wuerffel Trophy. The Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the Football Bowl Subdivision football player who best combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement.

Gibbons played high school football at Clearwater (Florida) Central Catholic. He was named first-team all state his senior season and first-team Small Schools All-American by MaxPreps. Gibbons played college football at Notre Dame from 2017-2020. After graduating from Notre Dame in 2021, Gibbons transferred to Florida State. He started 24 games for the Seminoles over two seasons without allowing a single sack.

On July 1, 2021, the day collegiate athletes were first allowed to be compensated for their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), Dillan decided to use his NIL for good. He Started a GoFundMe to bring his 19-year-old disabled friend Timothy Donovan to Tallahassee for the FSU / Notre Dame game. TakeTimothytoTally raised almost $90,000, enough to pay for Timothy’s trip and to meet many other needs for the Donovan family. After the initial success of the TakeTimothytoTally campaign, Dillan started his own non-profit corporation, Big Man Big Heart, to promote the idea of using NIL funding to help others. Dillan recruited eight Collegiate Ambassadors at ACC and SEC football programs and helped them start their own GoFundMe initiatives. To date, Big Man Big Heart has raised more than $500,000 for sick and disabled children and others in need.

Timothy Donovan’s mom, Paula, said, “Dillan has done so much for our family. Everything he does, he does it because he really cares.”
